Point Source Audio Delivers on More than 2500 Musical Performances Across Europe
Sound Designer Poti Martin shares his approach and his go-to lavalier mic for live musical theatre
Before the curtain rises, a theatre production depends on dozens of technical systems working flawlessly. Lighting, staging, costumes, and audio must all come together to support the performance—without drawing attention to the technology behind it.

For Poti Martin, a veteran sound designer with 30+ years in musical theatre sound design, microphone choice plays a critical role in maintaining that illusion. The challenge is to deliver natural vocal clarity while keeping microphones completely hidden from view.
After extensive testing in live theatre environments, the designer adopted Point Source Audio CO-8WL lavalier microphones as his primary solution. Today, they are used across productions throughout Europe, supporting performances night after night with consistent sound and reliability.
Natural Sound; No Visible Technology
Unlike many live sound applications, theatre places unique demands on microphones. Performers move constantly, costumes change quickly, and the audience often sits close enough to see every detail on stage.
At the same time, dialogue and vocals must remain clear and natural, blending seamlessly with orchestras, sound effects, and ensemble performances. For Poti, maintaining the visual integrity of the performance is essential. This philosophy guides every aspect of microphone selection and placement—from capsule size to mounting techniques.
“I love when people leave the show asking where the microphones were placed because they couldn’t see them.”
Since adopting Point Source Audio microphones in 2020, the designer has used them across nearly all productions under his supervision—about 2,500 at last count.. These productions include major musicals and touring shows such as:
- Mamma Mia! – Copenhagen
- We Will Rock You – Helsinki
- Cabaret – Madrid
- Cinderella – Madrid
- Anastasia – Touring Italy
Many of these productions involve large casts, complex staging, and performances in multiple venues—requiring equipment that can adapt quickly while maintaining consistent audio quality.

A/B Lavalier Mic Results Were the Deciding Factor
Before committing to any microphone platform, the designer conducted detailed A/B comparisons between several professional lavaliers commonly used in theatre. The Point Source Audio CO-8WL quickly stood out for its tonal balance and natural sound character. Poti observed that “They sound exactly the same as some of the best microphones on the market. It’s incredible how equal they sound.”
Rather than emphasizing harsh high frequencies, the CO-8WL delivered a balanced response that worked well for both dialogue and singing—an important factor in musical theatre productions.
Hiding Lavalier Mics in Plain Sight
One of the defining characteristics of the CO-8WL is its small capsule size, which makes it easier to conceal on performers. In theatre productions, microphones are typically placed along the hairline or integrated into wigs, allowing them to remain virtually invisible even under stage lighting.

Beige, brown and black color mics are standard offerings but the lavs can be custom painted for camouflaging.

Technicians often customize each microphone placement to match the performer’s appearance and costume design. In some cases, the microphone cable is even color-matched to the performer’s hair. The result is a system that preserves the visual illusion of the performance. This invisibility becomes especially important in immersive productions where actors perform close to the audience.
Managing Water, Sweat, & Makeup
Theatre productions often run for hundreds of performances across multiple venues. Equipment must withstand sweat, movement, costume changes, and the daily demands of touring.

IP57 waterproof rating supports up to 30 minutes of immersion in 1 meter of water.
The CO-8WL microphones have proven durable in these conditions, including exposure to moisture and demanding choreography. The IP57 rating for water resistance has been particularly valuable during live performances, where microphones often encounter sweat or stage effects.
Compared with other lavaliers used in previous productions, the designer also reports fewer issues with connectors and cabling—helping reduce technical interruptions during long theatrical runs.
Consistent Mic Performance Across 2,500 Shows
Across thousands of performances, the combination of natural sound, discreet design, and reliability has made the CO-8WL a core component of the designer’s theatre audio system.

For productions where the audience’s immersion depends on flawless audio and invisible technology, the microphones help ensure that performers remain the focus of the stage.
With new productions continuing to tour across Europe, the microphones remain a key tool for delivering clear, natural sound while preserving the magic of live theatre.
